Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a treatment utilized to preserve and save a severely damaged or decayed tooth; by doing this, you avoid the need for an extraction and can prolong the health of your natural tooth. Root canals are typically performed to treat a tooth infection, a painful condition caused by the inflammation of nerves within your tooth.

If you are experiencing localized pain in your tooth and believe it may be infected, it’s crucial that you call our team in Beaufort, NC, as soon as possible for an appointment. If left untreated, a tooth infection can become increasingly painful and even spread to other teeth or parts of your body. Put your oral health first and call today!

Root Canal Therapy

Root canals might sound intimidating, but we can assure you that there is nothing to be afraid of. While this procedure has a reputation for being painful or scary, it is most likely that this idea comes from how the procedure was performed in the past.

Thanks to the modern-day use of anesthetics, technology, and better treatment techniques, root canal procedures are reported to relieve pain rather than cause it. Tooth infections can cause some of the worst pain imaginable, but a root canal alleviates this quickly.

The procedure consists of the following steps:

  • To start the procedure, the area surrounding the infected tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic.
  • Once you’re comfortable, we will begin removing any decay on the tooth and creating a tiny opening to access the tooth’s interior.
  • Through this opening, we will remove the pulp of the tooth; this includes the inflamed tissues, nerves, and vessels that are causing pain.
  • The inside of the tooth will be cleaned and filled with a biocompatible substance known as gutta-percha.
  • The opening of the tooth will be sealed to complete the procedure, and a custom-made dental crown will cap the tooth.

Our office uses CEREC machinery to create the perfect dental crown for you in just one appointment. Once we have completed your root canal, we will take a digital impression of the tooth using an intraoral camera. This impression will allow us to design the dental crown and upload the plan to our milling machine. Within one hour, your new crown can be cemented in place.
